The name Serrewet is one that came from Jaco’s inability, as a kid, to say his own last name, “de Wet”. Fortunately his speech improved and so did his skills.

Starting out as a programmer at, grounded Jaco’s ability to work with larger corporate clients as well as being able to provide smaller clients with a cost effective solution. Later on it emerged that he had a keen sense for building solid interfaces. Over time, Jaco started taking on more of an account management role and was handed RMB Asset Management, eThewkwini Municipality and UGU District Municipality as part of his client portfolio.

He then moved on to Private Property, starting out as the lead developer for the website. At the time, Private Property was the second busiest property portal in South Africa. In the 7 years at Private Property, he worked his way up to Head of Product, became part of the Management Team and qualified as a Certified Usability Analyst [1].

In his tenure as developer and Head of Product, the portal grew from 200 000 unique browsers to over 800 000, Private Property became the busiest property portal in South Africa, was awarded 2 South African Ecommerce awards [2], listed as the top 10 websites in South Africa [3] and managed to successfully rollout 8 partner sites, 2 African portals and mobile solutions for Private Property.

A great deal of the success of the portal was attributed to its usability and strong focus was placed on testing and improving the site’s ability to function. Jaco was fortunate enough to be invited to the International Property Portal Summit in 2010 and 2011 where he spent time with Product Managers from the busiest portals in Europe to share and collaborate on the challenges of the online real estate industry.

Jaco saw the launch of One Africa Media at the annual SA Internet Conference. Again, time was spent interacting with the online leaders in South African.

In 2013, Jaco left Private Property and started See what he has been up to lately on his blog and portfolio.

About Jaco

jacoThough a techie by day, Jaco’s alter ego tends to lean towards the arts. Most of his childhood was spent singing in school choirs and onstage school productions. He later managed to crack the nod to sing in the KZN Youth Choir as well as the University of Johannesburg Choir. Both earned him the opportunity to perform the most challenging of choral work and on some of the world’s most amazing stages.

Later he joined The Company of Theatre Arts, a Durban based amateur theatre club. Though amateur in principal, many of the performances received huge respect from the local theatre industry and was performed on the best stages Durban has to offer. Some of which include The Heritage Theatre, Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre as well as the Rhumbelow Theatre.

In 2013 at age of 33, Jaco relocated to Johannesburg to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams.
